Outer Fields

There is no one working the outer fields.

• This entire area has been left fallow.
• This is intentional. After a season or two, it should be fertile again.
• This is a relatively large area to leave fallow if it is hand-plowed all at once. This community likely has reliable access to oxen or other large beasts of burden.
• If their farming method is conventional, there are more plots somewhere nearby equalling roughly twice the fallow area, which will have crops currently growing. This setup could comfortably feed a town of ~300 people without much need for trade.

Metal mushrooms sparsely dot the fields.

• Air vents.
• Typically used for mines and large catacombs.
• The mushroom shape prevents anything being sent down from the surface.
• Even if the ventilation pipe is accessed, they are often designed with vertical S-bends and additional grates to prevent pests and debris falling straight down at high speed.
• If they ventilate an underground structure that is or was important, then many if not the majority of the mushrooms on the surface may be fake, lead any would-be intruder in circles, and possibly be trapped.
